Pool Decks

A pool deck has a harder job than a patio. It stays wet, people walk on it barefoot, and it sits in constant contact with chlorinated water and New England winters. We've been pouring and stamping pool decks across Massachusetts and Rhode Island since 2003, and every decision we make on these jobs, the finish, the pitch, and the sealer, comes back to those conditions.

Stamped concrete is poured as one continuous surface. There are no individual units to shift, settle, or open up gaps, and no joints for weeds and ants to work their way through. Over the life of a pool, that means less maintenance than pavers and a surface that stays level underfoot.

It also gives you the look of natural stone without natural stone pricing. Ashlar slate is far and away our most popular pattern around pools, though customers pick whatever suits the house.

To make your deck slip resistant, we add Shur-Grip to our sealer on pool deck installations. It's a polymer grit that broadcasts into the topcoat and gives the surface traction when it's wet, without changing how the deck looks or feels underfoot. It's a standard part of how we finish a pool deck, not an upcharge.

Massachusetts code requires that a pool deck pitch water away from the pool, and we grade every deck accordingly. On sites where the surrounding grade doesn't allow water to run off cleanly, we install drains as part of the job.

Pool decks are poured at 3 to 4 inches over a compacted base. Control joints are placed to manage where the slab will crack as it cures and moves through freeze-thaw cycles — every concrete slab cracks, and joint placement is how you decide where.
